New “Pivot” Cable Channel Targets Young Adults

This was reported by USA Today  on March 27, 2013.

“Pivot, due Aug. 1, will feature a mix of programming aimed at the “new greatest generation,” the 85 million or so 15-to-34-year-olds, says Jim Berk, CEO of parent Participant Media, being created from the ashes of Documentary Channel and Halogen TV, two small cable networks that reach 40 million homes. In an apparent first, the channel’s entire lineup also will be available via a mobile app to viewers who don’t subscribe to cable, at a monthly cost paid to Internet providers that’s “less than a cup of coffee,” promises Pivot president Evan Shapiro.”

Do you think this is a viable idea for a cable channel?

Discovery Channel Greenlights Scripted Series

The channels in Discovery Communications arsenal of networks sometimes rate well and sometime not.  In an over-satuated non-fiction programming market, it is hard for the Discovery Channel to get notices next to its relations such as TLC and The Military Channel let alone its non-related competition.  In an effort to stand out in the crowd, the Discovery Channel has announced its first scripted series called “Klondike.”  Time will tell if it will be as successful as The History Channel’s forey into the land of scripted dramas such as ”Hatfields & McCoys“ and what that will mean to non-fiction channels as a whole.

New Reality TV Show Based On Female Car Mechanic

“Car E.R.” Based on Pam Oakes, Fourth-Generation Mechanic & Owner of Pam’s Motor City

Fort Myers, Fla., May 7, 2012 – Oakes Entertainment and Pam’s Motor City are proud to announce “Car E.R.”, a new reality series starring Pam Oakes and the employees of Pam’s Motor City in Fort Myers, Florida.

Sponsored by AC Delco, “Car E.R.” follows Pam, Peter (her long time fiancé) and the rest of the gang at Pam’s Motor City as they deal with tricky automotive repairs, esoteric customers, and serious attitudes within the shop. Of course, not everything’s a problem, and there’s a lot of fun and good times, too.

Unique to this series is that Pam owns and operates the repair shop, day in and day out. Not many women dare to venture into this highly male oriented field of work, but Pam follows in her father’s footsteps, and gives the boys a run for their money. They better pay attention when she talks, because she owns the shop!

The series is slated for first-run distribution via the internet, with future television broadcasts on the horizon. Initial reviews are that “Car E.R.” is sure to be a hit, and the potential for being picked up by a feature network is high.

To see the first few shows click on www.car-ershow.com, and connect with the show on Twitter @CarERShow and Facebook. Pam is also the author of Car Care for the Clueless: Successful Used Car Buying 101.

High School Dropout Intervention on Ideas In Action

How often do we as producers get to work on a meaningful project AND get the chance to redo it in an additional version?  I am lucky to have the opportunity to produce a two-part look (each one a half-hour long) for the public television series Ideas In Action with Jim Glassman exploring how targeted middle school intervention and effective school leadership is curbing the high school dropout crisis in America.

I also have the opportunity to turn the content into a 1-hour special that I am working on now. This will allow me to add even more great content that I found it hard to part with during the initial cuts.  Here is a promo for the one-hour version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rISY_IAPgcc

As a mother, I’ve learned so much about how to help usher my children through their educational experiences. As an American, I am hopeful about our ability to educate all children regardless of their backgrounds. As a producer, I am thankful for the opportunity to share stories that may make a difference in someone’s life.

Close Ties documentary to air in October

The independent documentary, Close Ties will air Saturday October 22 at 6pm on WDSU (NBC) and Sunday October 23rd at 11:35pm on WDSU (NBC). Syndication coming to other Networks and let’s not forget the festivals!!!

Close Ties: Tying on a New Tradition provides an intimate look at a rites of passage ceremony that connects teenage boys with male role models. The ceremony at this New Orleans barbershop was created by Dr. Andre Perry and Wilbert “Chill” Wilson as a way to strengthen communities struggling with crime, poverty and alarming high school drop out rates. Cultural traditions have been the cornerstone of African American communities for centuries. Close Ties examines the impact of this new tradition and shows us how tying a necktie — an act associated with men who embody professionalism and prestige — can inspire high school boys to commit to a life of achievement and success.
